Steve lived and breathed motorcycles. In nine years of marriage, I\u2019d learned to like them, too, but a three-day journey from our home in Wisconsin was proving to be a long ride. \u201cWe\u2019ll finally get some time alone together,\u201d Steve had said. \u201cWhat more could you want?\u201d For me, there <em>was<\/em> one thing more I wanted. A baby.<\/p>\n<p>Tests showed that Steve and I were both capable of having children, but so far nothing had happened. And it wasn\u2019t for lack of trying. Steve was resigned to letting nature take its course. But I wanted us to be a family. A family with kids. I\u2019d tried talking about adoption, but Steve always said it wasn\u2019t an option for him.<\/p>\n<p>By that third day into our journey, I was exhausted. Camping by the roadside, eating snacks at convenience stations\u2014I was ready to be there. I switched on the microphone in my helmet and buzzed Steve on our intercom. \u201cI\u2019m so looking forward to Jellystone,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYellowstone, silly,\u201d Steve said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight.\u201d At this point I couldn\u2019t even think straight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have far to go. Hang on and enjoy the view,\u201d Steve said, giving me the thumbs-up. The scenery whizzed by without my paying much attention. <em>If Steve only understood how much I want a child,<\/em> I thought. Sometimes it was hard for me to think of anything else.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned around Steve to see if there was a sign for Yellowstone. Up ahead was a giant roadside billboard featuring a smiling toddler in a diaper. The message read, \u201cAdoption Is an Option.\u201d Not for my husband, it wasn\u2019t. <em>Dear God, please help me accept the things I cannot change.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We were weary-eyed and numb when we finally pulled into a campsite just inside Yellowstone National Park. It was crowded, and we\u2019d neglected to make reservations. \u201cWhat if there\u2019s no room at the inn?\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Steve handed me his wallet. He stayed with the bike, and I went to the ticket window. \u201cYou\u2019re in luck,\u201d the attendant said. \u201cWe have one bike spot left at No. 9. There\u2019s a bear box to protect your food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told Steve about the bear box. \u201cWhat\u2019s that all about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steve chuckled. \u201cBears <em>live<\/em> here,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re just visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We unhitched the trailer and popped open our tent. \u201cEvening,\u201d said the old biker camped next to us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvening,\u201d I said. Right away I noticed that his motorcycle was just like ours, only older. Steve helped me open the tent, then reached for a soda from the cooler. \u201cI\u2019m going to talk to our fellow camper,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ll leave you to set up, if that\u2019s all right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure,\u201d I said, waving him off. Now that we were here, I was determined to have a good time. My worries would be waiting for me when we got home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNice bike,\u201d I heard Steve say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName\u2019s Ed,\u201d said our neighbor.<\/p>\n<p>I finished unpacking and joined the men. Ed was as passionate as Steve about motorcycles. He was from Saskatchewan, Canada, and had been biking for years. \u201cTravelin\u2019 solo lately. The wife likes to stay home with the grandkids,\u201d he said. \u201cA fella\u2019s gotta get on his scooter and see what it can do, aye?\u201d Ed stood up and danced a little jig. \u201cHow long you two been married?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNine years,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKids?\u201d Ed asked.<\/p>\n<p>Steve was silent. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t seem to be in God\u2019s plan for us,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, indeed,\u201d Ed said. \u201cEleanor and me were married near 10 years and feeling like something was missing. You know the feeling, aye?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll too well,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted nothing to do with children unless they came from me. Stubborn, aye?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t help reaching for Steve\u2019s hand. Ed kept on: \u201cFinally I gave in. We adopted a little girl. Best decision we ever made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steve stood up, turned around and kicked at the dirt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot adopting would have meant no grandchildren,\u201d Ed said. \u201cLife without a child is one thing. Being alone in later years is another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steve turned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something to consider,\u201d he said. \u201cSee you in the morning, aye?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steve ushered me into our tent. \u201cThat was weird,\u201d he whispered. \u201cA stranger on the road. Riding a bike like ours. Talking about adoption\u2026and making a lot of sense. Maybe I\u2019ve been stubborn, just like Ed was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t believe my ears. Was Steve changing his mind?<\/p>\n<p>In the morning we saw Ed before he left. He looked at Steve. \u201cDid you give any thought to what I said?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely something to consider,\u201d Steve said. \u201cDefinitely.\u201d Then Steve and Ed shook on it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t wait too long, aye?\u201d Ed said. Then he winked at me. \u201cHave fun in Jellystone,\u201d he said.
