In the early 1980s I lived in the tiny town of Sweet Run, West Virginia. It\u2019s right on the border of Kentucky\u2014the intersection of struggles, stories, and songs.<\/p>\n

Judd Country.<\/p>\n

The first time I heard Naomi and Wynonna Judd was in a field somewhere near Ashland, Kentucky, the place of their roots. I was so mesmerized by their sound I don\u2019t recall the specifics. Only that I stood so close to the stage I could see their eyebrows rise and fall. \u201cThose two blend like flour in a cake,\u201d a man bellowed as I sipped Coca Cola from a wax paper cup. \u201cMark my word. They\u2019re gonna make it big!\u201d<\/p>\n

He was right. But this mama and daughter duo were more than their music.<\/p>\n

I soon learned that Naomi was a nurse<\/a>\u2014like me. Every nurse I knew was enchanted with this news. Naomi was one of us, cared passionately about the same things we did. Her eyes told of a longing for people everywhere to overcome what life had dealt them. But when she sang or spoke, it seemed to be just for me. Encouragement<\/a> from a friend I\u2019d never met yet somehow knew me well.<\/p>\n

I needed that encouragement as I battled chronic illness<\/a>. The Judds might have been performing in Kalamazoo or Phoenix, but I could slip a cassette tape into my car\u2019s stereo system and feel Naomi\u2019s heart. During my hardest days, she was a long-distance companion. As the years went on and she began to reveal her personal history, I saw that the lyrics she penned and sung were hard-won. Revealing things about herself\u2014family dysfunction, mental illness, hepatitis C\u2014was a risk, but if her challenges might help someone, she was down with it.<\/p>\n

\"Naomi<\/p>\n

My most meaningful Naomi memory arrived about ten years ago in the form of an estate<\/a> sale<\/a> at a white, two-story Ashland, Kentucky home. Naomi\u2019s mother was moving and downsizing. It was the sale\u2019s final hours; everything was marked at 75 percent off, and a friend had told me about some wonderful, never-used bedsheets that hadn\u2019t yet sold. But it was an item upstairs\u2014in a room rumored to be Naomi\u2019s bedroom\u2014that caught my eye. There sat a forlorn oak side chair with hand carving across the back. The antiquing community knew my fondness for downtrodden chairs, so I wasn\u2019t surprised when the lady in charge whispered, \u201cNo one\u2019s paid any attention to it, Roberta. If anyone could do something with that seat, it would be you. Five dollars and it\u2019s yours.\u201d<\/p>\n

The broken caned seat spoke to my spirit. A symbol of former-nurse Naomi and of me. Our dreams that stretched beyond nursing. I knew immediately what would be my remedy for \u201cNaomi\u2019s chair.\u201d A large piece of needlepoint that I had stashed in the back of a dresser drawer. I\u2019d worked on it\u2014its flower-garden design vibrantly splashed against a background as black as the darkest night\u2014in countless doctors\u2019 waiting rooms.<\/p>\n

When I\u2019d first spotted that chair, a line from River of Time<\/i>, a song Naomi co-wrote, haunted me: \u201cThe future isn\u2019t what it used to be.\u201d But redemption, I was to learn, tells a different story. I think often of the hauntingly beautiful lyrics from the Judd\u2019s popular song Love Can Build a<\/em> Bridge<\/i>: \u201cI would swim out to save you in your sea of broken dreams. When all your hopes are sinkin\u2019 let me show you what love means.\u201d Now when I look at that beautiful chair, I think about a woman who provided love, inspiration and comfort<\/a> to so many\u2014especially me. Thank you, Naomi. You may never know how you saved me in my own sea of broken dreams.<\/p>\n
