I could feel the relentless heat on my face and arms as I headed across the farmyard to the house.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the spring when we took the cows to grass, instead of new crested wheat greening the hills and creek bottoms, brittle brown stems from last year crunched under the cows\u2019 hooves.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, snow pack in the mountains fed the rivers through the summer, but now the rivers were nothing more than useless shallow streams\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>Inside I spoke to my friend Jeanie on the phone. \u201cWhat can we do about this drought?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWanda, you\u2019re good with words. Write a <a href=\"https:\/\/guideposts.org\/articles\/prayer\/prayers-for-strength\/a-new-prayer-for-tough-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prayer<\/a> to send out. Something to get everyone praying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>I can\u2019t do that<\/em>, I thought. But, then, I sat down at my computer and began to type: \u201cWe need to pray for rain to fall across our state of Montana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words flowed. \u201cSoft, gentle rain over our mountains, steady, even rain moving across our prairies. Rain soaking deep into the ground\u2026. We have no covering for our peaks. Send the snow to mantle their tops.\u201d <em>Snow! That\u2019s outrageous. It\u2019s June already.<\/em> But the words kept coming.<\/p>\n<p>I emailed the prayer to family and friends and urged them to email it to others. I don\u2019t know how many people prayed that day, but on June 4 I got an email from my sister: \u201cMissoula got six inches of snow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next message was from a friend in Libby in the northwest corner of Montana: \u201cIt\u2019s pouring! We\u2019ve been getting <a href=\"https:\/\/guideposts.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/better-living\/positive-thinking\/4-positive-sides-of-a-rainy-summer-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">downpours<\/a> all day!\u201d I rushed outside and looked at the sky.<\/p>\n<p>Clouds, heavy gray ones, with rain.
