There was no place better to be on Christmas Eve than by Dad’s side, wherever he was.

Our family-owned burger place was important to me too, but there were better places to be on Christmas Eve. “Dad, can’t we go home? Nobody’s going to come to a drive-in on Christmas Eve,” I said.

Before Dad could answer a car drove up. I walked outside to take the couple’s order. “Do you still give free dinners to couples on their anniversary?” the young man asked.

“Sure do,” I said. This pair looked like they hadn’t had a square meal to eat in quite a while.

I brought them their burgers and helped Dad shut down. “Need anything else?” I asked the couple.

“Well, we sure could use a jump,” the woman said.

“I have an old battery you can borrow,” Dad said. Dad installed it and the couple were off.

Dad and I went back in the drive-in for our coats. “Bundle up,” he said. “It’ll be a long, cold walk home.”

“Don’t tell me our car won’t start.”

“Not without a battery,” Dad said. “I gave mine to them!”

It was a long, cold walk home. But Dad and his good deeds kept me warm. There was no place better to be on Christmas Eve than by his side, wherever he was.
