Today We Invite You to Build a Lasting Habit
August 9, 2026All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord…—Psalm 22:27 (NIV)
I’ve developed this habit of waving hello to people the minute I turn off the main road in my town and head for home. Even though I’m not in my neighborhood yet, I smile broadly and raise my hand off the steering wheel to greet couples (who are strangers to me) out for a stroll or kids (who I don’t know from Adam) playing in their yards. I suppose I feel a shared sense of community with these near-neighbors. That’s why I wave and smile at them through my car window.
After fourteen years, my hand automatically lifts to wave the minute I turn onto that road and start toward home. Once, while daydreaming behind the wheel, I caught myself waving at a delivery man and then a plumber. The gratifying thing is they both waved back!
It got me wondering if my faith reflex was just as strong. Did I automatically turn to Jesus when I needed help or the support of a friend? Sadly, my natural default was to rely solely on myself. Like an amnesiac, I kept forgetting how much Jesus was willing and able to be my source for everything.
The solution is similar to my pattern of waving. The more often I look to Jesus, the more automatic it will become to see Him in every circumstance. He’s always beside me, no matter what road I’m on, awaiting me to wave hello to Him, too, and acknowledge His presence.
Faith Step: What positive action would you like to make automatic in your time with Jesus? Repeat that action as often as necessary until it becomes a habit.
