Today We Invite You to Care with Compassion
July 3, 2026Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.—Philippians 2:4 (ESV)
I wiped my forehead as the July sun beat down. It was not the best day to wear a suit outdoors. Still, I was honored to be a part of my friend Xuan’s wedding.
The ceremony had been a small affair—just family and a few close friends. Now, we waited to share a picnic-style meal together.
“I can’t wait for the pork to get off the grill,” Xuan told us. “It’s traditional Malaysian style.”
I smiled to be polite. I was vegetarian, so I wouldn’t be able to share the main course. I would stick to side dishes and a slice of cake. I could eat something more substantive when I got home.
“Food’s ready!” somebody shouted. Everyone grabbed plates and headed toward the grill. I filled my plate with several salads. Then I took a seat at the table, waiting for the others.
Somebody set a hand on my shoulder. “You didn’t get your food off the grill,” Xuan said. “Thanks, Xuan,” I said. “But I’d get really sick if I ate meat.” “I know,” Xuan said. “I was worried you would be hungry, so I picked up some bean burgers yesterday.” I turned around. Xuan held out a plate with two burgers already on buns.
In the midst of planning a wedding, Xuan had been concerned about what I could eat. He had anticipated my needs, and he had met them.
I thanked Xuan as he handed me my plate. I was grateful for the food he provided for me. I was even more grateful to have a friend who cared so deeply for the needs of others.
Lord, help me to see the needs of others and to meet those needs.
