A Mother’s Answered Prayer

For years she thought that God didn't hear her prayer.

Your word I have hidden in my heart. Psalm 119:11

My son has finally discovered the path that leads to God. Now, Jeremy and I are in the same Sunday school class, and when he walks through the door, I want to stand and say to everyone, “Look! My son who once was lost is found.” But, of course, I restrain myself and only say, “Good morning, Jeremy.”

Recently, our teacher posed a question about the letter of Paul to the Romans. Jeremy raised his hand and quoted, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer there in?” (Romans 6:1–2).

He added matter-of-factly, “Mr. Bob Craig made us memorize almost all of the sixth chapter of Romans in high school. Even when I lived for years in rebellion, those words played over and over in my heart. Finally, I couldn’t ignore them any longer.”

We adjourned and moved into the sanctuary. The pastor announced that he’d be preaching from the sixth chapter of Romans. I looked toward the back for Jeremy. He, too, was searching for me. And when we connected, we gave each other a thumbs-up.

Most people in our small congregation understood and smiled, as did the pastor. I could even imagine God smiling and sticking His thumb up, celebrating Jeremy’s rediscovered faith.

All those years, Father, when I thought You didn’t hear my prayer, You were at work in Jeremy’s heart.
