When my friend John invited me to give a presentation to his Rotary Club, I thought it would be like any other club meeting. We gathered at a restaurant for dinner. Afterward, the club president got up and made some announcements and opened the floor to other members.

Then someone shouted, “Happy dollars!” The Rotarians dug into their wallets and purses for dollar bills, which they held up. Each member shared a wish or a happy sentiment—get-well wishes for ailing members, good-luck requests for upcoming projects—as a gentleman went around the tables collecting the bills. I even received some good wishes for my upcoming talk!

John told me the dollars would support the Rotary Foundation, which funds programs to help end poverty and illiteracy. Everyone was in good spirits after giving their happy dollars. What a great way to connect and raise money for a favorite charity. I’m going to suggest my church choir do the same next time we meet.
