When Things Look Dark

He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night.—Psalm 78:14 (NIV)

WHEN GOD LED His people out of slavery, He led them by a cloud during the day to signify His presence. When the cloud appeared (despite it making them fearful) it led them to safety. Sometimes we cannot understand what is happening. All might look dark, but the truth is there is no cloud of trouble that will ever darken Jesus’ presence and protection in your life.

Dear Lord, when I feel lost, help me remember that You always go before me, behind me, and beside me.

Make Better Choices

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is— His good, pleasing and perfect will.—Romans 12:2 (NIV)

LENT IS THE perfect time to listen to the voice deep in your heart and be guided by God’s wisdom. Steer away from things that give you that nagging negative feeling in the pit of your stomach and make habits and choices towards your best life.

Heavenly Father, You are my guide. Help me live a life that frees me from discomfort. Help me make choices that please You.

Food for Thought

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.—Philippians 4:8 (ESV)

SOMETIMES NEGATIVITY INVADES our thoughts and plagues our lives dragging us down. Philippians 4:6 advises us to guard our minds by fixing our thoughts on Jesus. The best way to fill your head with good healthy thoughts is to concentrate on Him.

Heavenly Father, clear my mind of unhappy thoughts. Help me focus on You.

Do You Believe?

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; They will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.—Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

DO YOU BELIEVE Jesus always keeps His promises? If you are struggling to find the strength and patience to wait on the Lord remember the source of your hope. Allow Him to comfort you as you grow in faith.

Dear Lord, when I become weary waiting for an answer to prayer, You renew me with Your strength.

Imagine Heaven

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.—John 14:3 (NIV)

SOMETIMES IN THE midst of world news and personal troubles it is difficult to comprehend the hardship on earth. It’s important to take a moment and thank Jesus for the beautiful eternity that He has already prepared. When we focus on our eternal home, it can help put the current state of things into perspective.

Lord, thank You for being with me, here and beyond heaven’s gates.

Sacrifice of Praise

Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess His name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.—Hebrews 13:15–16 (NIV)

LENT IS A time for drawing closer to Jesus. Many give up something this time of year—a small sacrifice to remind them of Jesus’ amazing sacrifice for us. This Lenten season, why not replace a habit of grumbling or complaining with praise. As Hebrews says, we learn to offer praise “through Jesus.”

Heavenly Father help me replace grumblings with contentment and praise.

A Life Filled with Light

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.—2 Corinthians 4:6 (NIV)

THE MORNING SUNRISE transforms the sky replacing the darkness with glorious beauty. The same is true for our lives, when the light of Christ shines on us, we are all transformed–and we recognize that the simple and ordinary can become sacred.

Heavenly Father, shine Your glorious light into my life. Help me stay centered in my commitment to be a positive reflection of Your love.

Fight Disappointment with Faith

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.—James 4:10 (NIV)

HAVE YOU EVER thought, “How could God do this to me?” Sometimes what you might perceive as no from God is actually exactly what you need to make you a better person. Instead of feeling disappointed, be grateful and believe that His reasons are always right.

Heavenly Father, it’s not easy to always trust Your will, but I’m trying each and every day and I’m growing closing to You and living a better life because of my faith.

Live with a Happy Heart

Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.—1 Timothy 1:19 (NLT)

IS SOMETHING IN your past weighing on your heart and mind? Admit your fault and ask God to forgive you. Thank Him for hearing your apology and making it possible to move forward and begin anew with a happy heart.

Dear Lord, thank You for Your forgiveness and the relief of a clear conscience.

Move Beyond the Problem

Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”—Matthew 20:32-33 (NIV)

IS THERE AN aspect of your life where you feel stuck? Maybe it’s a job where you’ve stayed too long, or a project that you just can’t seem to get done. Pray. Ask God to open your eyes to see new solutions.

Heavenly Father, thank You in advance, for guiding me to new ideas and the energy to follow through.

Author of Peace

God is not the author of confusion but of peace.—1 Corinthians 14:33 (NKJV)

WHEN LIFE SEEMS to be spinning out of control, focus on this verse. Ask the Author of Peace to help you regain your sense of calm. Take a deep breath and rest in the understanding that God provides peace above and through the confusion.

Heavenly Father, when I keep my eyes on You, I can relax knowing You have everything under control.

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.—Isaiah 60:1 (NIV)

LIFE CAN FEEL dark sometimes, just like a cold winter morning. When this happens, ask God to help you have the strength to start the day. Invite His glorious light in your life. He has plans for you. He wants you to embrace the life He has set before you.

Dear Lord, thank You for the warmth and light You bring to my life.
