Love in Action

With military deployments on the rise again, it’s important for the faith community to take notice and offer support to military families.

Although many Americans think the times of military deployment have passed, that’s just not true. We’ve been fortunate to have a lull in the numbers of soldiers sent overseas, but with worldwide conflicts heating up, that time is coming to an end.

This past week I’ve learned of several families in our community who are sending loved ones back to war—and I don’t even live near a military base. Those being deployed need to know their families are being cared for. This is our cue to step up and offer support.

When we learn that someone has a soldier being sent to war, it’s time to pick up the phone. Let the family know we’re there for them. Tell them we’re praying for the one who is in harm’s way, and follow up with concrete offers of help.

Military families with young children will be facing a single-parent situation. They’ll also be dealing with their kids’ fears. They can use an extra person or two to help with the workload. Others may be empty-nesters but the fear and hurt is just as intense. There will be fiancés, friends, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents of military personnel. We don’t always think about it, but they are facing a difficult time too.

It’s time for the faith community to take notice. Circle around these military families, offer your support, and show them what the love of God looks like in action.
