Keep the Faith with Ty’Ann Brown: School Daze

Guideposts’ VP of Ministries shares a few tips—and a special scripture—to help parents, educators and families navigating back-to-school season during this pandemic.

Hello, everyone, I’m Ty’Ann Brown, encouraging you to keep the faith.

Well, it’s that time of year again, back to school, but this year is like none other in our nation’s history. We’re almost six months into the coronavirus pandemic and parents everywhere are holding their breath to see how this year will play out.
Will schools open? Will it be safe? Should I choose remote learning or send my child to school part-time? What will the mental state of my child be after all of this isolation? Will my job schedule work out and balance out with me trying to help my child with school? Just unprecedented issues.

Teachers have their own struggles. Are their administrators supporting them? Many will quit their long-time positions rather than put themselves at risk.

But wherever you are in this muddle, a frightened and confused parent or a sad and lonely child or a proud yet concerned educator, we all face the same two things. That’s fear of the unknown and grief over the lost moments of our lives. We mourn the lost classes and bonding on the back of the school bus. We hold to our hearts the canceled field days and class trips, the undecorated lockers and the big school plays and homecoming games that just aren’t going to happen. You think about all the children to whom a school is a safe haven and a place for them to enjoy a warm meal.

So today we’re gonna turn it all over to God. This scripture strengthens me and it will help you too, as we walk forward into this strange new world. Isaiah 41 and 10 says, “Don’t be afraid for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged for I am your God. I will strengthen you and I will help you. I will uphold you with my victorious hand.” Keep the faith, God bless you, especially in this school year.
