He gives power to the faint and strengthens the powerless.—Isaiah 40:29 (NRSV)

One bright fall day, I dusted off my bike and pumped air into the tires. I’d biked to our library many times, so, halfway there, why was I winded? Walking in, I noticed a wobble in my balance. And hadn’t grocery bags been getting heavier?

When was the last time I exercised? Oh.

I used to get in lots of exercise with my friend Karen. She and I met through our elementary-age kids. After putting them on the yellow school bus, we walked two miles through our neighborhood. We rode stationary bikes and lifted weights at the Y. We talked about everything from quilting to faith. Our routine continued for years, without effort.

Then Karen’s husband, Randy, retired, and I lost my exercise partner as they began walking and going to the Y together. That day at the library, I realized I needed to renew my strength, just like those bike tires needed air.

When was the last time I prayed for strength? Dear Lord, please help me find my next exercise partner.

Ginny called as she was dusting off her treadmill, wanting to know if I’d be interested in working out with her. I nearly shouted, “I’ll join you in my basement!” As we walked, we talked over the phone about everything from caregiving to faith. Then we lifted weights and stretched. We agreed to “walk and talk” twice a week.

I texted two friends in my neighborhood. Joan meets me to walk on Wednesday afternoons. On Sunday afternoons, Joyce and I walk. The topics are wide-ranging but always include faith. I often wave to Karen and Randy. My faith muscles feel stronger too!
