Steadfast in Faith
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.—Romans 15:13 (NIV)
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.—PSALMS 121:1-2 (NIV)
In one of my favorite movies, a great battle breaks out between two warring tribes in a valley. When the tribe that everyone is rooting for begins to lose, they begin to question if they have the stamina to continue. When all hope is lost, the leader of the tribe looks up and sees the one person who can win the battle for them coming over the hill. Everyone finds renewed strength as they are saved.
When my father was caring for my mother, there were times when it seemed like a battle. In quiet moments, he would listen to a song where one of the most prominent verses rang out, “…I will lift mine eyes to the hills./ Knowing my help comes from you.” I would watch as he’d pause in his activity to take in those words as if he were receiving a personal promise.
In those moments I was reminded that God is so much bigger than the help that showed up in the movie. He did grand things like form the universe, and then cared about small details like numbering the hairs on my head (Luke 12:7). That very fact gave me peace, knowing that help is on its way when I need it.
In the times where you feel like you are warring in your valley, just take a moment and look up.
God, Thank you so much for being my help. I am so glad to know that when it seems I’m fighting a losing battle, you are my hero on a hill.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.—Romans 15:13 (NIV)

But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.—Matthew 6:17–18 (NIV)

The Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.—Romans 8:26 (NIV)
