Hope in Times of Loss
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.—Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.—1 JOHN 4:16 NIV
Caregiving is a full-time job. Our job description overflows with never-ending duties. Some of us stay with our loved one every day and have not slept a full night for so long that we can’t even remember the last one.
Others fill in part-time, providing respite for others. Or maybe we provide support from many miles away. No matter our role, caregiving lingers on our minds constantly. Is she safe? Will he fall? Did she take her medications? How can I rearrange my schedule to take him to that doctor’s appointment? Am I doing enough?
But our to-do lists, our questions, our fears and anxieties do not completely describe our jobs as caregivers. People ask us how we keep doing what we do.
One word provides the answer: love.
We know and rely on God’s love to dispel our fears, quiet our anxious thoughts, and give us the physical strength we need. We rely on God to fill us with His Spirit.
When we focus only on Him, we draw on His power to manage each day. His love underlies our job description.
Strong and powerful Lord, You are our only Boss and the One I can rely on for filling my heart with love. Your love sustains me each and every day.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.—Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.—Proverbs 19:11 (NIV)

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.—2 Timothy 1:7 (ESV)
