National Day of Prayer

I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.—PSALM 17:6 NIV

Have you ever tried calling someone’s name in a crowded room? You yell and wave until everyone is looking at you except the person whose attention you’re trying to get. Or you call, leave a voice mail, text, and send an e-mail, all without getting an answer. Is anything more frustrating?

With God we can be confident that He hears us. He stands ready to listen to us all the time. In fact, He welcomes our prayers. He encourages us to pray to Him and pour out our hearts, our concerns, our praises, and our dreams. Prayer connects us deeply to God. Just as you would have a weak relationship with a friend who only called when she needed something, our relationship with God grows and deepens through regular prayer.

One simple way to organize your prayer time is with the simple acrostic ACTS. A is for Adoration. Tell God how much you love Him and why. C is for Confession. Confess areas in which you’ve fallen short and messed up. T is for Thanksgiving. Thank God for the many ways He has shown you His love. S is for Supplication. An old-fashioned word that simply means to ask for something. Whether or not you use this format, take time to regularly connect with God throughout your day.

Lord, thank You for listening to us when we pray. You are never too busy to hear even the smallest request. Help us to remember to come to You with everything. Amen.
