On a Wing and a Prayer

In the day when I cried out, You answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul.—PSALM 138:3 [NKJV]

Mom’s hospital caseworker didn’t mince words. “Your mother can’t live alone. She’s not processing conversations or directions. She needs 24/7 care. The rehab facility we’re sending her to will only keep her a week. You’ll need to find a permanent memory care home for her.”

A million questions ran through my brain. How do I possibly find one so fast? Can she afford a memory care home? Can I break her independent living facility lease? I felt overwhelmed and paralyzed. Tears welled up in my eyes. All I could do was say a silent prayer. God, help!

The caseworker’s tone became sympathetic. “We work with people who find homes for seniors. Would you like to see their information?”

Hope kindled. “Yes, please!”

She handed me several colorful brochures. A warm, familiar face smiled at me from the top one. Our former worship pastor’s daughter! I hadn’t seen Amanda in years and didn’t know she had this service for seniors and their families.

Relief flooded my body and spirit. I now had an advocate and friend helping me search. Within days, Amanda located four homes that met Mom’s needs and finances. After touring them all, I selected one only 10 minutes from my home. I don’t know how I would have managed without Amanda’s expert guidance. An encourager and guide sent right on time!

Thank you, God, for answering when we call, for providing a way when the mountain in front of us looks too difficult to climb alone.
