Solitude and Rest

He told them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest for a while,” because so many people were coming and going that they didn’t even have time to eat.—MARK 6:31 (ISV)

Since my husband, Tim, became ill, I spend a lot of time waiting. Waiting for prescriptions to be filled, waiting for Tim’s name to be called by the doctor, waiting while Tim works with the physical therapist. Over the last few years of this new routine, I have become adept at finding the most convenient places where I can slip away for a cup of coffee or to read a book while Tim is being cared for by his medical practitioners.

One recent morning, I walked around the corner from Tim’s physical therapist’s office to grab a coffee and bagel during his appointment. The woman behind the counter took my order, then asked if anyone would be joining me. When I told her I was on my own that morning, her reply surprised me.

“Solitude is a beautiful thing, isn’t it?” she said. Her smile was so warm, I immediately smiled back. “Yes,” I said. “I appreciate the value of a few minutes alone.” As I settled in at my table, I realized how good it felt to have someone, even a stranger, encouraging me to enjoy these few minutes of rest.
