Destined to Be Friends

Isn’t it kind of amazing how certain friends enter your life?

By the time you read this blog post, I’ll be on a plane somewhere high above the clouds. I’m headed to Hawaii with my friends, Gino and Connie, for a week-long break.

I’m so excited I can hardly type. Not only for the wonders awaiting us in Maui (I’ll be sure to keep track of those!). But also just to hang out with my friends.

Isn’t it kind of amazing how certain friends enter your life? I’ve known Gino and Connie for five years now–we met back in 2010. I’d just moved to New York City after getting a job in copywriting for an ecommerce startup.

Diana and her friendsAt the time, I’d questioned whether or not I was making the right decision, if it was really the best position for me. My dream was to work at a magazine or newspaper. And yet, something about the company felt right–like I belonged there somehow. Sure, it wasn’t my dream job, but moving to the city was a first step.

The company was growing fast. Every week brought new co-workers, most of them around my age. In my first week, I met Gino in the office kitchen. He’d just started a week earlier.

I hoped we’d become friends. We shared the same oddball sense of humor. And I didn’t really know anyone else in the city, besides my sister. One month later, Connie joined the company too. We all bonded over pizza at a company scavenger hunt that summer.

It’s been two years since I left that company. Gino and Connie no longer work there. But our friendship is going strong. We still get together for dinner every other week and chat over group text daily. I never thought, five years ago, that we’d vacation together in Hawaii one day!

It’s funny. The “job that wasn’t my dream job” turned out to be the best job I could’ve ever found. The majority of the friends I have today came from that one company. Sometimes I wondered what I was doing there and whether my writing dreams would ever come true. But God always has a plan. I can’t help but marvel at how He placed us all there, friends I can’t imagine my life without.

Now I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us in Hawaii–who knows who we’ll meet!
