God’s Crooked Lines

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.—Proverbs 16:9 (ESV)
There is a saying that “God writes straight with crooked lines.” His plan is not always predictable. Unexpected twists and turns can throw you off balance unless you are rooted in faith and ready to take on new experiences.
My Loving God, I am learning to appreciate Your unexpected directions, which lead me to grow in ways I never imagined.

Right Now in This Moment

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.—Matthew 6:34 (NIV)
When you feel worried about the future, focus on the now. Pray and ask God what He wants you to do, right now, right at this moment. Know that God is with you and your faith will see you through.
Lord, when I get off track and worry about tomorrow, lead me back to the here and now, and to the wisdom of Your Word.

Be Good to Yourself

The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”—1 Kings 19:7 (NIV)
In the above verse, Elijah is feeling down and the angel of the Lord nudges him towards self-care. As you focus on doing good deeds for others in the new year, do not forget to give yourself something special. Treat yourself. You deserve it.
Dear Lord, thank You for teaching me the importance of nurturing myself and renewing my spirit by connecting with You.

Eternally Grateful

Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.—Colossians 2:7 (NLT)
Gratitude will change your life. By being thankful, you reinforce your understanding of God’s goodness. When you are facing a situation that seems confusing or upsetting, thank Him for His understanding. Praise Him for His wisdom and guidance.
Heavenly Father, I can endure any problem because I know You are working on my behalf. I am safe in Your hands.

God of Wonder

Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.—Habakkuk 3:2 (NIV)
God still does wonders. Let your prayer for the new year be the above verse. Do not limit His power with your beliefs. Instead, be open to limitless possibilities. Begin 2023 with an open heart and the words, “Not my will, but Yours, God.”
Lord, I praise You for Your wonderful works to come.

Feeling Stretched?

For He carries out what is destined for me, and many such destinies are with Him.—Job 23:14 (NASB)
When God’s plans stretch you beyond your comfort zone, turn to the above passage. Repeat the verse in your mind, trusting that He will do the work through you. There is nothing to fear—reaching beyond your current skillset will help shape and guide your life.
Lord, I surrender my doubt and worry. Work through me.

Peace in God’s Word

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.—John 1:14 (NIV)
“In the beginning…” The Bible opens with this profound truth (Genesis 1:1): God fills the past, the present and the future. Yet, He took on flesh and came to live with us human beings. Why? Because His love is so deep and so strong, it never ends.
Dear God, at the start of this brand-new year, guide me to make a difference in this world for Your glory.

Dare to Doubt

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!”—Mark 4:39 (NIV)

Someone said that doubt is not the opposite of faith, it is in fact a part of every faith journey. When God’s plan is greater than you can grasp and doubt storms your faith, lean into the wind—and believe.

Heavenly Father, how wonderful that even my doubts lead me closer to You, and to understanding and believing in what I do not see.

Quiet Time

But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.—Matthew 6:6 (ESV)

Sometimes, in order to hear God’s voice you must turn down the noise of your life and turn your attention to listening. Sitting in stillness can be a heavenly practice that brings you closer to Him. In moments of silence, He speaks to you heart-to-heart, and gives you clarity of mind.

Heavenly Father, help me silence my internal chatter. Open my heart to the whispers of Your voice.

Look Ahead with Hope

Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!—Psalm 42:11 (NLT)

January can feel bleak with midwinter weather, but don’t let it get you down. Treat yourself to things that make you feel good—including spending time with God. Look ahead with hope. God has great plans for you!

Heavenly Father, no matter what challenges I face, I can still rejoice in You. You are the Source of all hope. I trust Your plan.

God’s Provision

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his in Christ Jesus.—Philippians 4:19 (NIV)

With the holidays behind you, are you facing anxiety over paying your bills and making ends meet? If you’re experiencing financial problems, take a deep breath, let go of your stress and trust in God’s provision. God has taken care of you in the past, and He will take care of you today, too.

Heavenly Father, help me get my finances in order, to be smart in borrowing and diligent in paying what I owe. When bills overwhelm me, remind me that You are in control.
