“Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” John 16:24 (NIV)

There is never a shortage of people asking for things. I am no exception. I want to be a bestselling author, I want to be in a career that I love, I want to have enough money to do the things in life I’d love to do… the list is endless.

But am I asking for the right things—or in the right way? Jesus says in John 16:24 that we must ask in His name. Ask and ye shall receive. Only then will our joy be complete.

Jesus wants us to pray to Him, and to speak with Him of the things in life that we truly desire, but not just for the materialistic trappings we all love and adore. We must also ask for the things make us grow spiritually too. We must ask Jesus for guidance in our lives, not just when it’s convenient, but in all things and at all times.

I’ve taken to reading my Bible every night, but not in a methodical way. I calm myself; take a few deep breaths, close my eyes, and then I flip through the pages until I feel the urge to stop. Then I open my eyes and I read what’s in front of me. I am asking Jesus to guide me to what He wants me to read. I am always in awe of the words of wisdom that I receive… when I ask.

Faith step: Today, ask Jesus for one thing you’ve wanted, but never asked for.
