Rest in God’s Arms

Lying there, it seemed as though I rested fully in God’s strong and mighty hands.

So Naaman went down to the Jordan River and dipped himself seven times, as the man of God had instructed him. 2 Kings 5:14

I called my Al-Anon sponsor to ask for advice. She lives in another state but knows me like we’re next-door neighbors.

“So what do I do? Part of me thinks I should…”

“Oh, Julie, you’re stuck in stinkin’ thinkin. Aren’t you?”

My sponsor was right.

“I’ve been there plenty of times,” she said gently. “Remember, we have to surrender daily, moment by moment. When we hang up, stand beside your sofa. Then fall over onto it, like dead weight. You know the sofa won’t drop you. God won’t either. Lie there for a few minutes. While you’re still and quiet, let go and let God. Whatever decision you make, it’ll work out just fine.”

But standing  beside my sofa, my friend’s idea seemed far-fetched. How could collapsing onto it do any good? Then I considered how well my sponsor knows me and how much alike we are. We laugh together and remind each other of the amazing power of surrender, though at times the concept sounds unlikely.

“Okay, God. I know this looks silly…” I lined up alongside the sofa and dropped over. Lying there, it seemed as though I rested fully in God’s strong and mighty hands.

Lord, when I start stressin’ and obsessin’, I need to do what sounds foolish—and surrender my troubles before they get too heavy.
