Celebrate Advent with Prayer

The word “Advent” is from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming” or “arrival.” Advent is the days leading up to Christmas, starting the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day. It signifies both the birth of Jesus as well as His second coming. While Advent’s origins are unknown, outside of a few historical theories, it is nevertheless a holy time in the modern day. On Sunday, November 27 people around the world will light the first candle on their wreaths and say an Advent prayer to celebrate the coming of Christ, the Light of the World.

The Advent season is an invitation to peace and wonder—even in the midst of crowded shopping malls and busy holiday schedules. It gives us a chance to slow down and truly revel in the feelings of anticipation this season brings. As mystic Caryll Houselander wrote, “In the seasons of our Advent—waking, working, eating, sleeping, being—each breath is a breathing of Christ into the world.” An Advent prayer can be a wonderful way to do that.
