Blessed to Be Stressed

The Angels on Earth editor-in-chief is reminded of her blessings during a time of stress.

I was rushing my daughter Louisiana out the door so she wouldn’t miss her bus this morning when she said, “Wait! I’m forgetting my lunch!”

I looked inside the open brown paper bag on the kitchen counter. A bottle of water. That was it. That was as far as I gotten last night before I told myself I’d get up a little bit early to finish making her lunch.

Louisiana is a budding foodie, and I usually enjoy assembling a modest feast in the brown bag lunch she takes each day to middle school. If she’s having a tough day (and middle school is full of them!), her lunch reminds her that I love her and am always there to help figure things out.

What kind of message did a lonely bottle of water send? I grabbed a not-quite-ripe pear and a slightly stale cheese Danish, shoved them in the bag and shoved the bag at Louisiana. “I’m sorry, Sweetie. I just forgot.”

She just made the bus, thank goodness, but now it’s lunchtime and I’m feeling like a miserable excuse for a mother. If I can’t remember to make a simple school lunch, how will I meet my deadlines at work, or edit a story (or write a blog!), or fill out the e-Organizer for my taxes, or find my favorite earrings that I put in a special spot and now can’t remember where that spot is?

Do you ever feel like life is flying apart on you, and you can’t keep up with everything you have to do? I do. But then I remember that I’m blessed with all the things I have in my life. In a way, I’m blessed to be stressed.

P.S. By the way, I’m sorry I’m a day late with this blog!
