The Blessing of Education

I make this pilgrimage to remind myself of how blessed I am to have been given the opportunity to learn, to be taught.

Guideposts Editor-in-Chief Edward Grinnan and his dog, Millie

I’m writing this from the student union at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. It’s a tradition of mine.

I come here nearly every year for a game at the Big House with my sister and get to also spend time with my brother and his wife and whoever else is in town.

I always stop into my old college town on Friday on my way in from the airport just to wander around a bit. Like most college towns, it’s changed a lot but a lot is exactly the same. There is something reassuring about that balance, poised between tradition and progress.

The four years I spent here set a course for my life. My college education not only gave me a useful skill set but also opened my mind to the world and its possibilities. I think I make this pilgrimage to remind myself of how blessed I am to have been given the opportunity to learn, to be taught.

Both our presidential candidates spoke about the need to strengthen our educational system. Now that the election is behind us, I hope these positions are not pushed aside for more partisan concerns. There is nothing more important than educating our people. It begins with great teachers and great teaching institutions like Michigan.

A good football team doesn’t hurt the enthusiasm to attend college either. I need to get some new Wolverine swag before the game tomorrow. Go Blue!
