A God Who Cuts Through Red Tape

Guideposts blogger Michelle Cox shares a story about when God cut through some red tape for her when it came to medical insurance.

Tears welled up after I got off the phone.

My pharmacy had called days before with the news that our insurance company required prior authorization for my eye drops—the same insurance company that had paid for those eye drops with no problem for all of 2015.

And then came the followup phone call that led to the tears. The insurance company had denied the drops. It doesn’t sound like a big deal, but you have to know the rest of the story to understand.

I was diagnosed with glaucoma several years ago. I’ve lost part of the sight in my right eye.  When I close my left eye and look at a page, it looks like someone has marked out areas on the paper.

When I learned I had glaucoma, a nurse friend told me, “Don’t worry. Glaucoma is a disease of decades. They’ll give you drops, and everything should be fine.”

It wasn’t that simple. The first drops didn’t bring the pressure down. Nor did the second . . . or the third. For months after that, we worked our way through all of the drops. None worked.

Then we tried combinations of drops. Again, success didn’t come easily. After trying a variety of combinations, I was thrilled when I went for my check-up and the pressure had come down.

Those drops have kept my eyes stable for two years, and I hadn’t lost additional sight—and now they’d been denied.

My doctor called in a replacement medication—and then the pharmacy called again. They’d been denied as well.

So I called the office and asked for my doctor’s nurse. The lady on the phone said, “She isn’t here. Maybe I can help you.”

I explained about the insurance company denying my eye drops, and then denying the replacement ones as well. I told how it had taken months of trying various drops and then combinations that would keep the pressures down, and that my eyes had been stable for almost two years.

Then I shared about my cousin who is blind in one eye and has lost part of the sight in the other. Almost in tears, I said, “Is there a way I could write a letter to the insurance company explaining this?”

And then with emphasis to her words she said, “I am going to take care of this for you.” The next day when I went to pick up the new eye drops, they’d filled my old ones—the drops that worked!

I’m so grateful for a God who cuts through red tape. You see, several friends had been praying with me for God to work it out. And in His perfect timing, He had just the lady I needed to speak with at the doctor’s office who would go to bat for me.

When I called one of my friends to share the good news, she said, “This is the verse I claimed for you yesterday, ‘So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.’”

I’m so grateful for a God who cares about every burden that’s on our hearts. Aren’t you?
