The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, yet it didn’t fail, because it had the foundation on the rock. (Matthew 7:25, NIV)

Storms come to everyone, but at times it seems like military families live in the midst of tornado alley. We face so much—all at once. From deployments, changes of duty stations, training missions and frequent separations.

I used to believe that when I walked closely with God, He’d protect me—and those I love—from the storms. Then our son enlisted and was sent to war. For me, that was a storm of epic proportion. My emotions swirled at almost tornadic force. I was hammered with fear, uncertainty and an overwhelming sense of dread.

I cried out to God, asking why He hadn’t protected us from this situation? As I thumbed through my Bible this verse stood out, and I realized the truth. This didn’t happen because we weren’t in God’s will. It happened because we live in a world that’s fallen.

Now I can face the storms with a little more understanding and peace. I’ve learned that building my spiritual house on a rock doesn’t keep the storms from coming, but it does give me a place to cling when they’re raging.
