Staying Spiritually Fit

How to continue growing in your faith.

Staying spiritually fit
Prayer is a powerful force for good. At Guideposts, we believe in the strength of prayer to bring comfort, hope, and healing. Your generous donation today will help us continue to share the power of prayer with those in need. Together, through prayer and support, we can make a difference.

Caring for our spiritual well-being is one of the most important ways we can impact our quality of life, yet ironically, it is often neglected. With life’s many distractions, such as watching TV, shopping or working out, we must learn to make it a priority. As stated in the Bible, “Spend your time and energy in training yourself for spiritual fitness. Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next.” (1 Timothy)

This year, one of my goals is to be more spiritually fit, but at times I already find myself distracted by the pulls of daily life such as writing, playing tennis and watching TV. Though these are not bad activities, I must learn to focus first each day on reading my devotional, praying, reading the Bible, serving others, meditating and other disciplines that draw me closer to God.

Often people give up on their spiritual fitness because of an inconsistent practice or lack of seeing immediate results. God doesn’t hold this against us, but instead extends grace into our lives. We need to be gracious to ourselves and never give up on being spiritually fit. And when we feel spiritually dry, let us be reminded of Isaiah’s words, “The Lord will guide you continually, watering your life when you are dry and keeping you healthy, too. You will be like a well-watered garden like an ever-flowing spring.” May this promise be fulfilled in our lives.

Lord, keep me spiritually fit and help me do my part; may I continue to grow in my faith.
