An angel? I glanced at the figurine in my hand, and then at the Nativity set on the coffee table. I had bought this Nativity seven years ago, and I loved setting it up each December. But I’d never noticed an angel in it before.
I looked up at the mantel, where I’d placed my collection of angel figurines. I must have accidentally put one of my angels with the Nativity set when I packed it up last Christmas, I thought.
But the angel in my hand matched the rest of the Nativity set: same style, same size, same pastel coloring. I placed her in the stable by the sheep.
One week later, Mom passed away. Christmas was hard that year. The following year when I set up the Nativity I looked for the Nativity angel, but she was nowhere to be seen. I counted the figurines. Eleven. The angel must be the final piece, I thought. I glanced at the box: 11 PIECE SET.
I counted the pieces again. Three wise men. A shepherd. Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Four manger animals. There were 11 pieces—but no angel.
A real angel must have known that my first Christmas without Mom would be hard. So she sent a special figurine to watch over my Nativity—and me.
