I’m still reading letters about my May/June editor’s note in Angels on Earth, a tribute to my parents on their 55th wedding anniversary. Every single one feels like an angel in my inbox, whether it’s email or snail mail, no matter.

I was pleased to hear by snail mail that I’d gotten the message across about my mother, at least to reader Mary Tripp of Fresno, California. “Your mama sounds like a fun lady with quite a sense of humor.” She got that right! And that my daddy “sounds like the perfect grandpa for your daughters, nieces and nephews.” Yep, he sure is.

Mary went on to say she hoped one day my own daughters “write a similar column” about me. (Me too, but my parents are a hard act to follow!) And she finished on a personal note: “I hope your daughter Lulu enjoys her graduation and that she has been accepted into the college of her choice for the coming Fall.”

Well, it’s about time I got to Mary’s letter, written back in May. But it was a whirlwind summer, getting Lulu ready to go off to school, a two-day drive away. That’s where I was all last week. And of course we brought the dog along to say goodbye too.

Lulu seemed so happy and confident, I couldn’t let myself cry. I’m thrilled for her, starting this new adventure with a spirited roommate–from California, by the way, Mary. Just this morning I got a text: “First class in 20 minutes!”

I wished Lulu bonne chance, because she was on her way to a high-level French grammar class and I still remember a little bit of my own French. So, merci to readers like Mary Tripp, my angels on earth who are kind enough to write.
