Hi. I’m Colleen Hughes editor in chief of “Angels on Earth.” And here’s a true story about an everyday angel from Terry Cole Hauer of Rockford, Illinois. Angels come to us every day as a neighbor, an unexpected rescuer, a kind stranger, or a loyal pet. Listen now to a story of just such an everyday angel.
Over the years, Terry and her husband had adopted several cats from an animal shelter. But one cat, Trooper, was different. Trooper rarely asked anything of his lowly human owners. In fact, he was the only one of their cats who never even jumped on the bed to wake them up in the morning for food.
But one night in the wee hours of the morning, something gently tap Terry on the face. She opened her eyes. Trooper, he was standing on the bed beside her. She sat up. The house was dark. It was freezing cold. Something wasn’t right.
She woke her husband. Power must be out, he said. He went to check around the house. They called the electrician. He took a look at the old wiring in the basement. Sparks showered like fireworks. It needed to be replaced.
You could have had a fire in here, the electrician said, good thing you called. They wouldn’t have, Terry thought, if she hadn’t woken up or been woken up. They’d rescue Trooper. Now, he’d rescued them.
