It was a long trek up a wooded mountainside to get to my friend Teresa’s, but I was determined to deliver her card personally. Before I left, I said goodbye to the angel that sat on top of our Christmas tree. “Watch over me while I’m away,” I told her. I patted our dog, Shep, on the head and left the house.
Halfway up the mountain I leaned forward to catch my breath. Teresa’s Christmas card fell out of my pocket. I turned around to retrieve it. That’s when I saw the animal tracks. Something was following me!
I should have brought Shep along, I thought. He could scare away anything. Dear Christmas tree angel, are you watching over me? The next moment I heard Shep’s loud bark. He bounded through the snow to my side, and I reached down to hug his neck. I thought I saw the long tail of the animal that had been following me slink off into the forest.
When we got home everyone treated Shep like a hero. But Shep and I knew that the real hero was perched on the top of our Christmas tree.
