The email came from my coworker, Alina. “Be an Angel Day is August 22nd. Can some of you share your stories of a random of act of kindness you’ve performed?” I hadn’t heard of Be an Angel Day before, but I loved the idea…and it didn’t take long for me to figure out how to help.
urgently. Chip’s a police officer and he was there assisting Animal Control, when a volunteer mentioned that their food bank was low. Very low. Chip and I are huge animal lovers (my Pit Bull terrier, Sonny, is a rescue) and the thought of the shelter—a place of hope for so many homeless animals—running out of food broke our hearts.
That weekend we printed out an online coupon from PETCO and stocked up on everything from kitten food to dog biscuits and toys.
Walking into the shelter, I wondered if our small effort would help. We just have a few bags of stuff, I thought. What we’d wished we could do was find each of the animals a home (or take them home with us!).
The woman at the front desk beamed when she saw us. “I can’t thank you enough,” she said. “I was afraid we would run out of food this week.”
People like her are the real angels—the ones who give tirelessly of themselves every day. But Chip and I have vowed to make giving back a regular part of our new life together. For us, this year’s Be an Angel Day was an important reminder of just how divine that can be.
