Be Prepared for a Rainstorm

I have a small wonder to report.

It happened last Thursday as I walked to work in the morning. If you haven’t heard, we’ve been having a bit of a heat wave in New York City, so it was very muggy outside. I was talking to my dad, arms full. Cell phone in one hand. My bag filled with files from work, food for the day, an umbrella and even a change of shoes.

“How’s the weather?” my dad asked. My parents have been in Florida the past three weeks, so they ask for regular New York weather updates.

“Oh, it’s really hot,” I said. “It’s supposed to rain today, though.” The weather report predicted showers in the afternoon.

I turned the corner onto Nassau Street, crossed the road and walked beneath a building’s scaffolding. The second I was underneath, it started to rain. Like cats and dogs. Up ahead, New Yorkers were running for cover.

“Dad, I gotta go,” I said. “It’s raining!”

I hung up and took out my umbrella. If I hadn’t just stepped under the scaffolding I would’ve gotten soaked. My phone too. Talk about perfect timing! I couldn’t help but smile as I walked the rest of the way to work.

Of course, I probably won’t always be so lucky when it comes to New York’s unpredictable weather. After all, a month ago, I got stuck in the rain without an umbrella for what seemed like 80 blocks.

But who knows? Maybe God had a reason for that too. Sometimes we see the scaffolding. Sometimes we don’t. God is always there, though, protecting us. Watching our backs.
