The other night, the strangest thing happened. I was awoken around 2 or 3 a.m. by the scent of burning wood chips. (I should probably preface this by saying that I wasn’t sleeping anywhere near a campfire or fire pit of roasting s’mores. I was just in my apartment!)
That night, the smell of wood chips was unmistakable. I looked around for a minute or two, confused. There was nothing burning in my room. My apartment didn’t seem to be on fire. Was it coming from my blanket? I looked at my quilt and pressed my nose to it. Sure enough, it smelled like wood chips! What in the world? Before I could figure it out, I fell fast asleep.
I woke up in the morning and my first thought was, “Wood chips!” I picked up my quilt and gave it another sniff. It just smelled like an ordinary quilt! Nothing else in my room smelled particularly bonfire-like, either. So why did the smell of burning wood chips wake me up at night?
I recently wrote a story about how the early hours of the morning are especially sacred, so I’m not so quick to dismiss it all. And, as bizarre as it sounds, I just can’t shake the feeling that it was important. Maybe even spiritual.
