From The Headlines: An Accident on Purpose, and a Traveling Bible

Duane Innes was driving family and friends in his minivan, headed to a Seattle Mariners game, when a truck drifted across his lane…

There have been some great stories in the news since my last Mysterious Ways blog post. Stories that definitely show that more than coincidence is at work in our lives.

Man Crashes Car, To Save Another Man’s Life

Duane Innes was driving family and friends in his minivan, headed to a Seattle Mariners game, when a truck drifted across his lane. Duane swerved, narrowly avoiding an accident. When Duane looked through the driver’s side window, he saw a man slumped over the wheel.

The out-of-control truck sideswiped a concrete barrier and picked up speed as it continued to drive down the shoulder…straight towards a busy intersection.

“I’m going to get in front of him,” Duane told his passengers.

Duane sped up his minivan, passed in front of the truck, and slowed down enough for the truck to hit his rear bumper. Then Duane pressed the brake, and the two vehicles rolled to a stop.

The driver of the truck, an 80-year-old man, had suffered a heart attack earlier, and the poor circulation had caused him to pass out, foot on the gas.

But it had happened in view of Duane Innes, a manager of Boeing’s F22 fighter-jet program, a man who knew this:

“Basic physics,” Duane told The Seattle Times, “If I could get in front of him and let him hit me, the delta difference in speed would just be a few miles an hour and we could slow down together.”

Most people would avoid an accident with an out-of-control car. But in this situation, perhaps the only man who knew what to do was in the right place, at the right time.

Then there’s this story from British Columbia, Canada: The Bible That Came Home Again.
