The other day, my sisters and I were walking to dinner in the city when I spotted a giant sparkly wreath hanging from a building. In fact, all around us there were Christmas trees, lights and even more giant-sized wreathes.
“Where does all this stuff come from?” I wondered aloud. ”All of a sudden these decorations appear, but you never see anyone putting them up!”
My sisters laughed at my bewilderment. They even joked that I should write a blog about it (challenge accepted, sisters!).
But that wreath really got me thinking. One day, the city is dark and gray. The next day, it’s a Christmas wonderland! Evergreens pop up on street corners, twinkly lights adorn otherwise ordinary windows and there’s a surplus of ribbons everywhere. Even the city’s landmarks get festive.
And yet you rarely see what’s going on behind the scenes. I’ve never spotted someone stringing lights on the trees along Fifth Avenue. Or a team of highly skilled decorators hanging giant wreaths on skyscrapers. I’m not really sure how it happens, it just does.
I guess that’s how it is with life too. You might be in the depths of despair. And then a prayer is answered. A miracle unfolds. You can make out the light at the end of the tunnel. We don’t get to see all the work behind a miracle. How God brings so many random elements together to produce wonder. But our lives can change in the blink of an eye.
Isn’t that one of the lessons of Christmas? A child was born in the little town of Bethlehem. And, overnight, the world was transformed.
