Praying for the Passersby

Combining prayer with donating blood felt like I’d hit the 2-for-1 special. Try it. You might like it!

Prayer is a powerful force for good. At Guideposts, we believe in the strength of prayer to bring comfort, hope, and healing. Your generous donation today will help us continue to share the power of prayer with those in need. Together, through prayer and support, we can make a difference.

A friend and I walked down to get swabbed as blood marrow donors for a local girl suffering from sickle cell anemia. (This is extremely easy to do, and I urge you to register.) A Bloodmobile was parked next to the registry site, and my friend asked, “While we’re here, shall we give a pint?” So we did.

I’d never been in a Bloodmobile before. The windows opened out onto the street, and as I lay in the comfortable chair squeezing a grip bar every 5-10 seconds to keep my blood pumping, I gazed at the scene.

There were teens horsing around on the sidewalk, and families having a picnic in the park across the street. Salsa wafted in from a passing car. A grandmother scolded some children. It occurred to me that since I had nothing else to do, I could pray for each person that passed.

Lord Jesus, bless that young mother and give her extra patience today. I squeezed the grip bar.

Father, remind that boy of Your love. Squeeze.

Holy Spirit, whisper into the heart of that weary old woman. Squeeze.

Ten minutes, many prayers, and a pint of blood later, it was time for juice and cookies. When I stood up I felt strong and sturdy on my feet. The day is always better–and I am always stronger–when I’ve given something to someone. Combining prayer with donating blood felt like I’d hit the 2-for-1 special. Try it. You might like it!
