Pray without ceasing. I Thessalonians 5:17

For years, I’d heard that drinking eight glasses of water a day would be good for my health, so I felt pretty noble when I finally made it my New Year’s resolution.

But as I walked into the kitchen one night, I was stunned to see my cat washing his face by scooping water out of my glass, dashing it on his face and circling his wet face with his paw. His bowl of water went untouched.

Just how long has he been doing this? Could I have caught some cat disease? I raced to the phone to call my vet, praying, Please, God, let her answer right away. I could be seriously ill right now!

She answered on the first ring—Thank You, God.

“What’s wrong with your cat?” she asked.

“Oh, it’s not about Junior,” I said. “It’s about me. I just discovered that he has been scooping out water from my drinking glass to wash his face. What should I do?”

There was a moment’s pause and then she said, “Keep your water in the refrigerator.” I could swear I heard her chuckle as she hung up the phone.

“What a waste of time and worry,” I said to the vet when she was examining Junior during his next regular checkup. “But not a waste of prayer,” she commented. “Prayer is never wasted.”

I’ve thought about what she’d said many times since then. Though it was something silly, that odd situation had led me to pray. If only I could stay as connected to God all the time. Now there’s a subject for a resolution.

God, may I be inspired to pray more often, over big matters and small, so that I may become closer to You.
