I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.—Philippians 4:13 (kjv)

“And you know what happened then?”

The first-graders leaned forward, captivated by my Pilgrim costume and my first-person account of Thanksgiving.

“Dozens of Indians came out of the forest….” After the story, one little girl commented, “That was some adventure you Pilgrims had!” I nodded assent. “I had an adventure last night!” she added.

“Really? Tell me about it.”

“Me and my little sister walked to the dry cleaners all by ourselves. Past this yappy dog on our block. We have adventures all the time. Last week we made brownies.”

Driving home, I thought about what new “adventures” I had experienced lately. Everything in my life seemed so routine. Why risk taking that class if I might fail? How did I know the new family on the block wanted someone to visit them?

I knew the truth. I was afraid to take risks, afraid to have “adventures.” I was dependent on what I knew.

This month, let’s be adventurous—try a new restaurant, or a new recipe. Join a book group, a neighborhood coffee club. Let’s live each day courageously, knowing that our source of help is sure.

Dear Lord,
There are those who have little,
And those who give much.
Dear God,
This Thanksgiving
We too want to show our
Thanks
By giving. Help us to work with
Our own loaves and fishes
Our own talents and
Compassion—
To “feed” others.
For it’s true that,
When you’re doing the
Lord’s work,
Things begin to multiply
In amazing ways.
