I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are Yours…. My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message…. John 17:9, 20 (NIV)
“I’ve been praying for you.” The loving words arrived in a brief e-mail. Simple words, but they warmed me all the way to my bones, like a fireplace on a cold winter day.
My friend didn’t know I was having a rough day. She didn’t know the details of my need. But she cared. Many mornings, my husband holds my hand and prays for me. His words strengthen and comfort me.
I often call my friend Patti and we pray for each other. Hearing her ask our Creator for the help I need renews my hope. And another Friend also gives us the loving gift of prayer on our behalf: Jesus. His petition was not only for the disciples who sat around Him, but for those who would come later.
When we read the full chapter of John 17, we discover that He asked for protection, joy, sanctification, and unity for His followers. What a thrill to know Jesus has asked the Father for those blessings for us! Then Jesus expresses His love in even deeper measure. We witness the longing of His heart as He asks that one day we would be with Him where He is, and see His glory.
When I read these words I feel cherished. He wants us to be with Him. When life seems overwhelming, and courage fails, we can take comfort in His beautiful expression of love. And we know His prayer will be answered.
