READ: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.—Matthew 6:20
REFLECT: A beloved grandmother who became ill was taken into the home of her daughter and family. She especially enjoyed bedside visits with her four-year-old great granddaughter Jill. Jill smoothed the covers, discussed the things she and her doll Moppet had been doing, and often brought Moppet with her to visit too.
One day, the door to the bedroom was softly closed and Jill’s mother told her gently, “Grandmother just went to heaven.”
“In her nightgown?” Jill exclaimed. “She should have got ready.”
Jill didn’t understand that grandmother had gotten ready a long time before. For this final journey, Grandma had packed days with prayers for family and friends; she had gathered up knowledge of God’s greatness and shared it with many; she had given her love, her time, her tithes.
PRAY: Father, whether we’re expecting to leave this earth in the next few days, months or who knows when, make us ready daily to die, with debts paid, promises kept and hearts that have forgiven.
DO: Write down three qualities of your loved one that you want to make your own.
