By My Spirit

“It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”—ZECHARIAH 4:6 NLT

When we care for a sick loved one, we’re often faced with what seem to be insurmountable circumstances. The natural tendency is to try to take charge and do whatever is necessary to protect our loved one’s rights. Maybe we’ll try to line up an advocate to battle doctors or insurance companies for us—or even write our congressman! Believing that no one could possibly care for our loved one as we can, we’ll give up sleep, proper eating and exercise, in the pursuit of our goals.

Recall that Jesus said we can do nothing by ourselves (John 15:5). On our own, we’ll inevitably wear out—then be unable to help the one we’ve committed to serve. Only God’s supernatural power allows us to keep pace with the rigors and pressures of caregiving.

God’s ability to make good from everything—even our poor decisions and our attempts to do everything in our own strength—is a promise we should rest in. His Spirit is our strength!

Let God fight for the rights of His loved ones. After all, “It is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s” (1 Samuel 17:47 NIV).

Father, when I want to go to battle for my loved one, please help me remember that my own strength and might are nothing. Without You I can do nothing. Let me lean on Your might and rest in Your strength in every situation I face today.
