He’s Mine

The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.—Psalm 121:8 (KJV)

I took a deep breath and told my dad that I couldn’t come tomorrow; I simply had too much I needed to get done. I assured him I would call in the morning.

I knew he didn’t need me. His laundry was done, his bills paid, his meals stocked in the refrigerator and freezer. He had a medical alert button, his house was safe, and his health was stable. He just wanted me to be there.

But as I drove home, guilt made me second-guess myself. Was I doing enough? I prayed to God to give me wisdom. The words He’s mine popped into my head.

These words kept echoing in my head throughout the evening. Finally, I started to think hard about what those words actually meant. I understood that yes, Dad belonged to God. God watches over Dad at all times. He is there to hear his prayers, comfort him and assure him that all is well. When I need to attend to my own life, God is still with Dad. He loves him more than even I do. I can trust God to watch over my father.

Dear God, help us to never forget that our loved one is your loved one, too.
