The Importance of Being There
I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.—2 John 1:12 (NIV)
And wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.—2 CORINTHIANS 3:17 NLT
Sometimes the constraints of caregiving seem like shackles, burdens that keep us from living up to our full potential. We stay indoors because the one we care for is bedridden. Our circle of friends is limited, as few people are eager to experience the suffering that is part of our lives. Our movements are hampered by the ever-present demands of our loved one.
But the Bible shows that physical restrictions don’t necessitate spiritual confinement. Although his body was chained, bound by shackles, the apostle Paul enjoyed an amazing spiritual freedom. Although suffering drove Job to cower in ashes, he eventually found the freedom to rejoice when he saw God.
We, too, can be freed by God’s Spirit.
God’s Spirit lives with us in our circumstances. Let’s seek Him. He will free us to enjoy even those moments when we feel trapped in small spaces. He’ll liberate us to intercede for others even when stimulating interaction with them is limited. He’ll release us to enjoy the stillness, even when we long for action.
Lord God, I feel like my circumstances are a prison. Please liberate my spirit. Teach me to rejoice in my own suffering.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.—2 Corinthians 1:3–4 (NIV)
The one who gets wisdom loves life; the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper.—Proverbs 19:8 (NIV)
