The Care of the Soul

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor…to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.—LUKE 4:18 KJV

When Jesus announced to His hometown synagogue that He was the prophesied Messiah, He gave us a glimpse into His caring heart.

Christ’s foremost concern was for the care of the soul. In this passage, His emphasis is not on the physical body. Even the phrase “recovering of sight to the blind” could have a spiritual application.

As we care for those around us, are we cognizant of their fundamental need for spiritual healing?

As we clean up the spilled milk or adjudicate the latest squabble, do we use it as an opportunity to explain biblical truths to our children?

As we minister to elderly believers, do we encourage them to remain faithful as they get closer to heaven?

And do we remember to share the good news with those who are sick and without Christ, knowing that their spiritual condition is much more serious than their physical?

As caregivers, we are Christ’s hands in this world.

Let us not forget to be His heart, as well.

Father, let me see the real needs of those around me. Let me care for their souls even more than their bodies.
