Singer Kay Armen had a radio show during World War II and I never missed it. One day right before Christmas 1944, she read a letter from a woman whose husband was in the service. “My husband and I listened to you sing ‘God Will Take Care of You’ while we drove to his deployment site,” the letter said. “It’s been our song ever since. It would be such a comfort to hear you sing it again.”
Ms. Armen obliged. In fact, after that show she never sang the song without dedicating it to the anonymous letter writer and her husband overseas. Then Ms. Armen reported that the woman’s husband was missing in action. Ms. Armen made “God Will Take Care of You” part of every show. I started to feel like this unknown couple were close friends. Whenever I heard their song, I said a prayer that they would be reunited. “I told her that all of us were praying for her husband and had faith he was still alive,” Ms. Armen said on-air.
As the following Christmas approached, a third letter arrived at the radio station. The woman’s husband was coming home! Kay Armen performed their song, “God Will Take Care of You,” one more time. And I said one more prayer, thanking God for listening.
