As I am trying to decorate Allyson’s new apartment in Los Angeles, I am keenly aware that my sister, Martie, is the trained decorator in the family. She is Martha Stewart, and I’m more like Jimmy Stewart.
Martie went to Purdue University and studied Interior Design while I went to Indiana University and studied journalism. She is truly gifted when it comes to eyeballing a room and knowing just what to do in order to make it come to life.
Me, on the other hand? Well, I only know enough about interior design to know when something looks awful, which is really frustrating. In other words, I know just enough to realize I’ve missed the mark at transforming a room but not enough to fix it. That’s when I call my sister for back up, and she never fails me.
While I freely admit I have a lot to learn in the realm of interior design, I have picked up a few things from observing my sister at work over the years. One of the things I’ve learned is this: Every room needs a focal point. Have you ever been in a room that has all the makings of a beautiful living area yet there’s just something missing? It’s probably lacking a focal point.
If a room doesn’t have a focal point, such as a fireplace or a large piece of art, you’ll find it’s difficult to decorate the entire room. Nothing seems to flow. You won’t know where to arrange sitting areas, place lighting or add accessories. Without a focal point, the rest of the room suffers.
You know, it’s the same way in life. If Jesus isn’t at the center of your life, everything else seems out of balance. Like a room without a focal point, your life may be adequate, but it will never be truly pleasing or the best it can be until Jesus is your main focus. When that happens, everything else falls into place, with a beautiful outcome. Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
So that’s your assignment today. Make God your focal point and let him rearrange your priorities and adorn your heart with his goodness, love and peace. You’re going to love the transformation!
Focal Point Tips
If you’re having trouble determining a focal point for your room, here are some suggestions (courtesy of my sister) that might work:
- A beautiful armoire
- An elaborate tapestry
- A wall with a mural
- A fireplace
- A large entertainment center
- A sculpture or fountain
- An interesting architectural accent
