Today is kind of an exciting day. Exactly one year ago I started working at Guideposts! Some days I can hardly believe I’m actually here. You see, the story of how I ended up at Guideposts is really a bit of a miracle…
I didn’t always know I wanted to be a writer, but I’ve always loved magazines. When I was little, I’d pore over my dad’s copies of Newsweek magazine like I was studying for an exam.
As soon as I spotted the new issue sitting on the top of the mail pile, I’d snatch it away and flip to one section–the last page. There was always some hidden gem there just waiting to be found. Even today, it’s my favorite page of pretty much any magazine.
When I finally realized writing was for me, though, I couldn’t seem to land a magazine job. I was either too qualified or not qualified enough. I even applied a few times to Guideposts (and once made it into the office for an interview!). But nothing ever happened.
So, instead, I took a job writing advertising and marketing copy. As much as I liked coming up with taglines a la Peggy Olson on Mad Men, I just couldn’t let go of my original dream, something God had planted in my heart when I discovered Newsweek back in elementary school.
Last year, before my 30th birthday, I decided it was time to make a career change. I promised myself I wouldn’t take a new position unless it brought me closer to my dream. But that was easier said than done.
After months of searching, I got an amazing copywriting job offer at an exciting, fast-growing company. I couldn’t say no. I took the job…and immediately regretted it. The people were wonderful, but it wasn’t “the dream.”
I never felt so lost and confused. I begged and pleaded with God to help me figure things out. But I couldn’t help but wonder–why had he given me a dream in the first place? Would it ever come true?
A few weeks after starting my new job, I went to my parents’ house for Easter. I was miserable all weekend, thinking about how my career hadn’t gone as planned.
After dinner, I flopped down on the couch and casually searched for jobs online. That’s when I saw it. On the holiest day of the year. A job opening at Guideposts. I submitted my application that Easter Sunday.
You can guess what happened next! Shortly after, I started working at Guideposts. And, on my first day, I was given a list of stories to work on, including something called “Secret Spaces.”
A regular feature. One that appears on the very last page of Mysterious Ways magazine. A seemingly insignificant assignment. But to me? A dream come true.
