This Memorial Day, please join me in remembering and honoring all military personnel who sacrificed their lives in the service of our country. These men and women taught us the true meaning of honor and courage.
When I was a boy, a dear member of my family served in the Vietnam War. He was a young, handsome, kind-hearted man with a promising future. But sadly, Eliot Jr. passed away while on duty aboard a Navy ship. I can still recall the day that the American flag was draped over his casket at the church–a sad occasion that lingers in my memory and heart.

Junior, as we called him, was more than a sailor. He was a son, grandson, brother, cousin, boyfriend, friend and more. On leave, he would always bring great joy to his family and friends. We were blessed with great memories of him. It has been almost 50 years since he passed away, but each Memorial Day I set aside time to remember and honor him and all others who gave their lives for our freedom.
My friend Joe, who also served during the Vietnam War, said it best in a post on Facebook: “This Memorial Day weekend…Please, do not give us who made it back home any accolades or honors…just take a moment to give honor and remember those in our military who gave all…May they all rest easy! God bless!”
Is there someone you want to honor? Please share with us.
Eternal God, may they all rest easy.
