On Halloween night, I took my four children trick-or-treating in our neighborhood. There was a chill in the air, and my five-year-old daughter, Emerson, shivered.
“We’ll get you some hot chocolate in just a minute,” I told her.
Our favorite house was coming up. Every year, these neighbors would set up a folding table in their driveway, creating a pit stop for trick-or-treaters. They’d put out a bowl of pretzels or another snack, plus drinks that suited our unpredictable Indiana weather. During a warm fall, they offered cold water and apple cider. If it was cold out, they heated the apple cider and gave out coffee and hot chocolate too. They even had disposable cups so we could take our drinks with us. Emerson wrapped her hands around her go-cup of hot chocolate, and I thanked our thoughtful neighbors.
No matter the weather, we can count on them to provide a spot for us to warm up or cool down while we rest and chat.
